Many people living during the 1970’s were eventually happy to see the disco ball fall and collapse, but during the actual decade, they were glued to disco and fashioned their clothing after the trend. Saturday Night Fever was more than just a movie set in the ‘70s. It was a representation of the times and the way in which people were breaking out of their tight ill-fitting suits and putting on leisure suits just to escape the monotony of everyday life. People were ready to explore the fashion world and began getting different options for dressing.

Much like the end of the ‘60s, women stuck with the trends of mini-skirts, bell-bottoms, and long hair, which extended well into this decade. Knitted polyester fabrics also became very popular for the females, and denim blue jeans started to break ground throughout the country in a big way. Choices for women were also a big deal, as skirts were expanded to come in sizes mini, midi, and maxi. Imagine that. Whereas clothing was not adaptable to all women previous to the ‘70s, now women had a variety of choices and could pick from them. Rock ‘n roll and disco continued to dominate the women’s sense of style as well.

As far as men were concerned, the 1970’s were a time to let loose and bring out the leisure suits. The fabric of the decade was polyester and men were wearing suits and other articles of clothing done up in polyester. The concern of most men was keeping the lifestyle carefree and making sure that the clothing would match. Unlike the 1960’s, which saw people using mass media to determine their clothing, people started to determine what they wore depending upon what was popular out in the nightlife. The ‘70’s were a time to remember and set many trends that still get brought back occasionally today.
