Even though the 1990’s were but a few years ago, it is not too early to assess
that period of time and see how the fashion trends carried throughout the
decade. One thing that changed drastically during the 1990’s as a whole was
that people became more relaxed—both at work and at home—and it showed in their
clothing. They were not quite as eager to throw on those tight jeans and wanted
to kick back and relax in a pair of baggy denim jeans and be comfortable.
People also had fashion accessible at their fingertips, as the development of
another form of technology, the Internet, led people to have less trouble
finding certain fashions.

Retails outlets stepped up their game in the 1990’s and once again, much like
the ‘60’s, gave people the chance to select clothing from a larger selection.
Less also became more, in all senses of the idea. Gone were the bulky shoulder
pads in suits for females and bangle jewelry fell out of style. The hair
reduced drastically, too, and woman saw women like Jennifer Aniston as cutting
edge with choppy hairstyles that angled the faces of the wearers. Everything in
the 1990’s became slightly subtler and not as overwhelming as the 1980’s.

The ever-important comfort level of the 1990’s is most important when discussing
this decade though. Warm-up windpants became trendy for both men and women
within the country, as they sought to be comfortable during everyday
activities. Fleece was also a fabric that hit the mainstream during the late
‘90’s, as was the stretchy lycra fabric. When people did have to dress up for
work, they were all about accessorizing with subtle additions to outfits and
did not stand out quite as prominently as during the ‘80’s. Finally, the
addition of certain technologies, like cell phones, helped fashion evolve into
fashions that could then accommodate these additions. Once again, fashion was
influenced and grew immensely as a result of technology. Now, what will the
2000’s bring?
