It would not be an exaggeration to say that the infamous “Hollywood” sign on Mount Lee in Griffith Park is one of the most famous signs in the entire world. Built in 1923, the sign originally said “Hollywoodland” before it was eventually shortened to “Hollywood” in 1945. Currently, it is illegal to take a hike up Mount Lee to stand alongside the Hollywood sign, but that does not mean that people cannot find a great spot in the streets of Hollywood to take a glance at the sign. 30 feet wide and 50 feet tall, the letters on the Hollywood sign are studded with low wattage bulbs that total somewhere in the range of 4000. Originally, the sign cost just over $20,000 to build.

By 1973, the Hollywood sign had been declared to be a Los Angeles Cultural Historical Monument by the city of Los Angeles. Numerous times during the lifetime of the Hollywood sign, it has been renovated, left for dead, robbed of its light bulbs, but eventually maintained by different donors and buyers wishing to keep the sign in good health and overlooking the Los Angeles streets. Still standing tall and stretching 450 feet across the side of Mount Lee and weighing 450,000 pounds, the current Hollywood sign was introduced back to the world on Hollywood’s 75th anniversary in 1978.

The Hollywood sign has turned into not just an icon in the minds of those living in Los Angeles, but a symbol of Tinsel Town and the movie-star lifestyle that accompanies the town. After all of the problems that the sign has faced during its lifetime, it continues to stand proud and, along with the Statue of Liberty or the Liberty Bell, represents an entire city within one monument. The Hollywood Chamber of Commerce and the City of Los Angeles continue to maintain its integrity and keep it shining bright up above the city.
