By 1973, the Hollywood sign had been declared to be a Los Angeles Cultural
Historical Monument by the city of Los Angeles. Numerous times during the
lifetime of the Hollywood sign, it has been renovated, left for dead, robbed of
its light bulbs, but eventually maintained by different donors and buyers
wishing to keep the sign in good health and overlooking the Los Angeles
streets. Still standing tall and stretching 450 feet across the side of Mount
Lee and weighing 450,000 pounds, the current Hollywood sign was introduced back
to the world on Hollywood’s 75th anniversary in 1978.
