If you and your family love movies, but don’t always have time to go see the
latest releases, or want to watch your favorite movies in the comfort of your
own home, you may want to consider creating your own home movie theater.
Creating your own home theater is fun, easy to do, and inexpensive, and will
keep you, your family, and your guests entertained for hours on end.

Before you get started, come up with a theme for your home theater that will
make it comfortable and inviting. Lighting, wall color, and the right speaker
system will give you the movie theater feel you want. To make the room stand
out, you can apply wall treatments, ranging from sponge painting the walls, or
painting the top or bottom half of the walls. Even if you haven’t decorated a
room before, wall treatments are easy and could make a big difference in any
room.

You may also want to add row seating to your home movie theater. You can
purchase plain wooden seat, padded office-style chairs, or even use old metal
chairs and redecorate them. Finding fabric for cushions is simple; you can
check out local craft and fabric stores, or cushions from yard sales. You may,
however, need someone to bolt the chairs down for you if you don’t have
experience with that. To set up your speaker system, choose the type of
speakers you want, and how much sound you’re actually going for. Remember,
bigger speakers don’t necessarily mean bigger sound, so try to test out the
speakers before you bring them home. Wire your speaker system along the top of
your walls if the speakers are smaller to make your home movie theater look
more professional; for bigger speakers, keep them a fair distance away from the
television to create the surround sound you’re going for. During previews, set
up your own concession stand—a small table and stools, along with your family’s
favorite teats, are a great way to keep everyone entertained. Once your home
theater is set up and you try it out a few times, you may never want to leave!
