The duo began their rise to hip hop stardom in 1998 when crunk artist, Lil’ Jon, included them on his album, So So Def Bass All-stars Compilation, Volume III. Their song, True City Thugs was a huge hit with Atlanta hip hop fans and in the strip clubs. A short time later, they released a two song single. Side A featured Whistle While You Twurk, a song about strippers. It eventually achieved nationwide airplay on both urban and crossover stations. However, the estate of Walt Disney objected to their use of the Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs famous hook. It was cut from two remixes of the song on their debut album, Thug Walkin’. This album brought them nationwide attention. Two more years passed before KOCH Records produced, Alley: The Return of the Ying Yang Twins. Unfortunately, the recording industry hadn’t fully caught on to their unique high energy crunk style and failed to give the album the promotion it deserved. It fell short of the desired gold status that every new artist wants. Their next break came that same year when Lil’ Jon and the Eastside Boyz asked them to be a part of their next album entitled, Kings of Crunk. It went double platinum and catapulted the Twins into the big leagues. Later, they switched to TVT Records to record Me and My Brother on their own. It went platinum. Ever since then their popularity has continued to soar. Their latest endeavor, USA: (United State of Atlanta) is a mixture of stompin’ high energy crunk and tracks that show a slightly softer side of D-Roc and Kaine. In 2005, they were nominated for Best Rap Video for “Wait (the whisper song).”
